Guilt and Overextension

I'm standing on a tightrope between two feelings.  One part of me feels guilty for saying no, and one part of me feels happy that I found an excuse to say no.  I also feel guilty for feeling happy about it.

A friend has a medical condition that is causing her to experience vertigo.  Monday she asked me to take her to the store, which I did.  Tuesday she asked me to take her to work, but I suggested she make sure her doctor is okay with it and she decided to stay home.  Today she called and asked me to take her to work again.

Let me just pause here and clarify that I am not a taxi service.

I didn't respond for a while and then eventually I told her I'd been driving and just got home.  She called and asked if I could take her to work.  I said I could in about an hour.  She said she had to be there in thirty minutes.  I told her that the drive takes thirty minutes and that she would be late if I drive her because it would take me time to get ready and more time driving to her house.

"I guess I will just risk it and drive myself on the freeway."  I feel the guilt trip in her declaration but I choose to ignore it.

I said, "Okay... but be careful."

I feel a little bad but at the same time, not very bad.  I'm not a taxi.  I wouldn't mind if it was a one time thing or if she offered to fuel up my car or made some other offer to compensate me.  Unfortunately I just get the impression she is too cheap to pay a taxi and would rather freeload off of my generosity.  Sadly for her, I'm lacking in that department.

I love having friends to do things with but not if that means constantly being called on to do favors.  I already watched her dog many times because she's too cheap to pay the cheapest of kennels to watch him.  I had to turn her down the last time she asked because we are trying to sell our place and we don't need two pets to have to pack up and relocate if someone wants to do a showing.

What would you do in my situation?  Say no, or say yes?
