Book Review: Heaven to Betsy

I just finished reading Heaven to Betsy, by Pamela Fagan Hutchins.  I'm not about to leave a glowing review.

  1. The genre is basically western mystery romance.  This is probably one of my least favorite subsections of literature, but I did try to give the benefit of the doubt.
  2. The book had a lot of really bad typos.  Maybe this problem is strictly a kindle edition issue, but still very off-putting.  Especially, since a couple sentences had one half missing entirely; a large half.
  3. If you love cowboys, you might enjoy this read.
  4. The characters can be annoying.  I found several of the key characters, the good guys, infuriating.  For example, the main male character is cryptic about everything and refuses to ever answer a question in straightforward manner.  I didn't feel that the progression in the story did much to change my initial impression of him, and still the main female character is "hot" for him.  Shouldn't the reader be hot for him also?
  5. The actual progression of the story was decent paced.  Once events begin to take place and frustration in investigation declines, the storyline gets three and a half stars from me.
  6. This book discusses religious topics.  The main female character is highly conflicted about faith and the religious figures in the story (mother and pastor) do nothing to improve the situation.
  7. I love a book that shows the scene to the reader in vivid color.  I didn't experience this joy while reading Heaven to Betsy.  The wording is direct, utilitarian and a bit woody.
  8. This book might interest someone who enjoys horses, riding and native culture.
  9. This book might also interest those who appreciate the subject of swooping in to bring new feelings of love to someone who has lost a romantic partner to death; new love after cheating and divorce; and new hope after fertility problems.
